Where The Wild Things Are
One of the all time great books is of course Where The Wild Things Are. How a book about monsters in your closets became a smashing success is beyond me, but like adults kids want that feeling of fear. The difference is they want fear mixed with safety, fun and fantasy that's just what this book delivers.

This is truly one of the greats (Right up there with Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day).
Personally, growing up I loved the illustrations.
Come to think of it, I also loved illustrated dinosaur books.
I guess it has something to do with kids becoming enamored with a magical "other." Something that does not exist in their daily world.
